Men's Health declares it as permanent success, ever since the “swinging 60's” continuously worn by mankind, the leather jacket is the classic in the wide array of leather apparel – with us, it is witnessing it's reincarnation. This is fitting, since the principle of tanning was already established in the old Egypt, however, if the pharaohs would've fit into a “Cafe Racer”...the aged look couldn't be more complete. The triumphal march of the leather jacket didn't start with Marlon Brando, it's proven origin is to be found in the motorcycle wear of the early 20's. It were the French bikers (who else?) accomplishing the pioneering work in the beginning of the 20th century. In those days the leather jacket obtained it's distinctive, typical design: the tight, short cut with the slim sleeves were chosen rather out of functional than fashionable reasons. The waist-length creation prevented the bike riders from sitting on their jackets and provided them with plenty of free movement on their machines. The sleeves complete this performance concept by making sure that the arms won't be pulled upwards while lifting something. After these first attempts to walk, another milestone was surpassed on it's way to become the trendsetter of the century – November 27, 1927. While the rest of the world still banked on pleated trousers, flat caps and sporting belts another institution, which had not to care two figs about fashion, broke new grounds: the U. S. Army. The biggest war machinery of modern times unknowingly rang in a new era for the fashion industry. New standards for civil fashion were set with the design of the pilot jackets A-1 and A-2. Instead of motorcycle jackets the Air-force received exclusively tailored functional wear, which had a lasting influence on the trends of the following decades. The A-1 had a completely new shape, defined by the cutting edge cut and it's distinctive knitting on sleeves, waistline and collar. Back then, a satin inner-lining provided for a relatively high comfort and the smooth surface rendered a comfortable inner life to the leather jacket. The A-1 had no zipper, but neatly worked into front horn buttons, which protected the wearer against all weather conditions. The A-1 has concluded the preparations, has paved the way for a new fashion era. It arrived in 1931 – and made a giant leap into the modern age. Times were gone, in which the masses only wore leather on their feet. With the development of the A-2, the successor of the A-1, new accents were set and crucial changes were made. For the first time a zipper with windbreaker was integrated, which closed the jacket completely up to the collar. Satin was exchanged with cotton, due to a better thermal-insulation and epaulettes for badges of rank were attached. Thanks to the formerly usual circumstance of piloting in an open cockpit, the A-2's most characteristic and defining innovation was made: the world famous leather collar with the snap-on buttons on the bottom to prevent a wild flapping in the wind. The A-1 and A-2 made fashion history: leather jackets, strictly conceived as functional attire create a completely new article of clothing – the blouson. While leather always has been associated with fierceness and a rampant moral conduct, the leather jacket now stands for a whole youth movement! Up to this day the leather jacket has lost nothing of it's rebel character, and superbly suits the street scenes as well as it's wearer.

In 18th century society it was common to stage “shepherd games”, in which the aristocracy transform themselves into peasants. The “simple people” used simple sheepskin – the aristocracy preferred the more noble “animal skin”. The Austrian and Bavarian nobility influenced this trend significantly, turned this mountain-style attire into socially acceptable wear. A new era hit England at the same time: industrialisation was on it's way. The crucial upheaval began at the end of the 18th century. The industrial revolution changed all economic and social conditions for good. Epochal change, upheaval of a complete society, a new definition of standards...what about the leather trousers? The traditional trousers were in crisis. The industrial revolution didn't just present us with urbanisation and steam-engines, it also brought about spinning machines and the mechanic loom – this meant production in an unknown dimension. Textile production became a key industry in 18th century England. Greats, such as Eric Hobsbawm rubbed salt into the wound:”...who mentions industrial revolution, means cotton.” Tough times for leather trousers. The development of new materials and the looming mass production threatened to oust “the good old' thing” from the legs of society – if it hadn't had prominent assistance. Basically, we owe it to the relentless encouragement of high influential circles and a deep rooting in the traditions of the people that this archaic and valuable garment has not been forgotten. The fact, that a garment outlasted thousands of years and still influences the big fashion trends in Milan or Paris is the biggest compliment one could bestow on the leather trousers.
